sometimes to read a book of poetry is to be reminded that another person is much funnier and better at expressing their pain than you are

"The best moments in reading are when you come across something – a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things – which you had thought special and particular to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead." - The History Boys

In our 20’s we understand the music. In our 40’s we understand the lyrics.

"Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front" (Wendell Berry) inspires me to embrace the counterintuitive tactic. "As soon as the generals and the politicos can predict the motions of your mind, lose it. Leave it as a sign to mark the false trail, the way you didn’t go. Practice resurrection."

Oh for sure!😂 Thank goodness we have them!

Agreed. To be honest, I find a lot of poetry pretty awful, especially modern stuff. So, I find I stick to a few favourites & read them over and over.

Ok - not another person but - my dog performs that role already. I mean, grifter level drama with the sad eyes and phony limp after I remove the splinter - which disappears the moment you aren't looking. 😉

Sometimes it is a reminder that I can spar with the best of them.

Oh, man, I need no such reminder. I know it. Through & through. But I gotta squawk anyway. Imagine the forest where only the bird with the prettiest voice is allowed to sing? So THANKS! to all of us birds. The cacophony is nature’s music.

I do not read enough poetry. More of a long novel reader. Including textbooks, could you maybe recommend a multi-writer volume I could used to enrich my appreciation of our culture? I kick myself when I have to Google stuff like "the center cannot hold" when novel writers make reference. Thanks.

Well, unless they’re dreadful poets, of which there never seems to be a deficiency of for some curious reason.

💕 I will read something by Sherman Alexie and think, "I could tell a story like that". I start writing something then realize I should leave the story telling to him. 😉

My "go to"... my first edition Sunset Gun, by Dorothy Parker. My Aunt Dorthea gave it to me, her mother had given it to her. It STILL gets me through the shit, to this day.

I've always loved a quote from Tom Waits - "I like beautiful melodies telling me terrible things." I can't write songs, but the guys who do write that kind of song got me through a lot of hard times.
