GDP counts pollution as growth. Deforestation as growth. Bottled water after rivers die as growth. It is time to count what actually matters: A planet that can still sustain 8 billion of us.

This planet cannot sustain 8 billion people into the future and the fact is that it will not stay at 8 billion. Population increases exponentially.

As the wildfire smoke of nearby forest fires starts to drift into our region, the uptick in sales of air-purifiers, are counted in the Canadian GDP as growth. Why isn't the loss of forests, structures, wildlife not subtracted from the GDP? Why not?

its can't we are eating and heating the Planet...decline is written as a constant in this equation...we are losing top soil and making up for that with CO2 production and by converting fossil fuels to fertilizers that are destroying the Natural biomes that have kept Earth alive for Billions of years

The best way someone explained it when discussing about data centers/homes taking over farmland (which we need for food) is that we choose to treat money as an ends rather than a means. Another statement that I can't stop thinking about is that we steal from our future to prosper today.

Maybe we shouldn't be trying to sustain 8 billion people. Maybe there are practical limits to how many people a planet can sustain without destroying the planet.

Worse, some seriously think we've radically undercounted rural populations & may be looking at something already closer to 10 billion people. Makes you think about why we lied about our nature's twice. It's like, even we thought it was bullshit when we did it: Homo sapiens sapiens (the tell!) NOT!

Farmers, ranchers, etc. know you can only grow so much food or graze so many animals on a certain, FINITE, amount of land. The Zero Population Growth movement / idea started ca. 1968 & the global population in 1970 was 3.7Billion. We are now headed for (in?) disaster territory.
