Those fish are not in New Zealand - this is likely AI generated. The mussel farms are commercial enterprises and the mussels mostly go to Japan. When the barges lift the ropes and scrape the mussels off, all the waste goes straight back into the sea where it rots.

Still, cleanup mussels have to be harvested, sent to industrial composting, deep-land burial, or specialized incineration. Avoid polluting seawater in the first place would be far cheaper and much easier to do.
