If only people knew, compared to clothes (100-150%), furniture(35-400%), or cosmetics (20-700%), the markup on books are low. Usually about 20-60%. And books need space, which is brick and mortar, then utilities. Wishing you success, as it is very tough to maintain. Have not included wages.

There used to be s Barnes&Noble near me. I was sad when it closed. A few years later the building became a Binny’s. As far as I can tell, there are no small independent bookstores (or large ones) near me. 🙁

This isn't actually true - Amazon sell books at below *your* wholesale price. Back in '09 I was working at a bookshop and the reps were telling us that Amazon demanded a lower cost price from all publishers or they would refuse to stock them. The publishers lowered the cost price for them.

While Amazon was putting me out of business, I would get orders for dozens of items, such as stethoscopes, etc. The "buyers" would give me credit cards to pay with, but never asked for a discount. They didn't mind to pay full retail price because they were paying with stolen credit cards.

I had a business I started from scratch. The exact same merchandise I was selling in my store was on Amazon listed for sale at exactly the price I was paying for wholesale. Then I found out how some "third party" sellers could afford to do so: they didn't pay for what they were selling.

My only trouble with our local indy bookstore? I pop in for one book and walk out with five. Discovery based on teaser titles and staff recommendations instead of algorithms. They also buy/sell used books so I find related OOP books I never would have looked for online.
