Montreal girl here. I think Montreal did more of the heavy lifting than Canada did. Montreal at the time was a cheeky, winking, sinful yet pious freewheeling city. Lots of people there were shaking off shackles of their own(sexual, religious, linguistic) Robinson caught us at our best

The stories my parents told me having lived not far from Jackie's first apartment are heartwarming. But canadas prejudices are less racial based and more religion, language and socioeconomic based. Add that to their record on first nations znd others and they are really no different

I lived on de Gaspe and remember the story of Mrs. Robinson being scared to death as the whole neighborhood was outside her duplex banging on the door and yelling for Jackie. Why so they could put him on their shoulders and carry him around the neighborhood singing. Vive Villeray !
