NASA's Viking 1 lander documented the very first sunset on another planet (Mars) in August of 1976. Diffuse, scattered light and long shadows caused by fine dust particles suspended in the Martian atmosphere. Visible banding in the sky is an artifact of the camera's incremental brightness levels.
