I'm a librarian and still use a date stamp. Not for the due date, but to mark when it was first put on the shelf. It makes it easier to know how long a book has been in the collection.

There was a stamp used on the same numbered inside page that proved a book belonged to a particular library service in my day! We had the return date label stuck on the front page but the return date was sometimes illegible on a very busy day with so many to stamp! I remember black inky fingers! ๐๐

I checked out a very obscure book in my universityโs library once. The last person to check it out was in 1910! It looked brand new even though it was kinda stuck to the shelf. But they were the only one in a century to read it and I felt a kinship with them. Like weโre only ones who get it โจ๐โจ

I'm Swedish, but we had the same system I think. Each book had its card, you took the book to the counter, they would take the blue(only top bits) card, put it in their box to note it was checked out and put in a different coloured card(Red I think it was here) and stamp it with a "Due Back" date.
